Meet Grandma Jen and Anijah

Meet Grandma Jen and Anijah.

In Connecticut right now, food insecurity is growing. 1 in 5 children are worrying where their next meal will come from. That's just not acceptable, and we are here for neighbors like Jen and her granddaughter Anijah.

As Anijah's primary caregiver, Jen makes sure her granddaughter is "living her best life" during the summer - just like kids should. She and Anijah are grateful that summer camps are free thanks to scholarships from the family's adoption agency. But with the high cost of raising a child on a fixed income, Jen looks for some financial relief from Connecticut Foodshare mobile pantries. They've been visiting since Anijah was four years old.

"It saves me money. So grateful for the food. Connecticut Foodshare makes a huge difference in the community, and I'm thankful."

Mobile pantries bring fresh healthy food to over 100 sites in Connecticut and serve over 25,000 households on average each month. That makes the difference between hungry and healthy for so many kids and families.

When the truck arrives, Anijah looks forward to strawberries or watermelon, while Grandma Jen plans how she will get cooking after shopping, "I make homemade carrot juice, veggies. Cheeses, I like those, and use those to make a veggie frittata."

Kids should be kids during their brief childhood, and caregivers should not have to wonder how they will feed their family this summer. Together we can ease Grandma's worries and ensure children have the food they need to thrive.
