Meet Melissa and Sherman
Melissa and Sherman have been married for nearly a decade and call Norwalk, Connecticut, home. Like many retirees, a fixed income and rising costs often make it difficult to cover everyday necessities.
When that happens, Connecticut Foodshare's mobile food pantries help bridge the gap.
On a frigid winter day, their warm smiles stood out among the neighbors waiting for the mobile pantry to arrive. When we introduced ourselves, they eagerly shared their story.
“Our income is limited, under $30,000 for the two of us, which used to work. But now insurance is double for the house and car. I am very budget conscious, so far so good,” Melissa said, gesturing to the mobile pantry truck, “It’s helpful.”
“Our social security is very limited. Any food that is available…is a big help. I get a selection of food, which I appreciate. The food always looks great over here. We appreciate what we get. We feel like we can be selective. They never make you feel like you don’t deserve it. It’s all about the love at Connecticut Foodshare.”
Their outlook remains positive, and they find joy in their day-to-day interactions.
“It’s exciting because you never know what you’re going to find. It’s a fun experience, because we love people and we get to make new friends.”
Sherman shares his empathy for his neighbors and the challenges they face.
“We've been in a sort of struggle off and on, and we know the effects of what people go through out here. I understand a lot why people are suffering…hurting,” said Sherman, as he squeezed his wife’s hand.
As they moved through the line selecting asparagus, tomatoes, butternut squash, apples, and other fresh foods, they happily posed for photos together.
“Thank you for your help and trying to keep things going...got a lot of stuff today – vegetables...fruits, juices. I'm pretty much set. It’s been great, I appreciate it, and I have love for you guys and what you guys do!”
We see Melissa and Sherman from time to time in the Norwalk area. They are always grateful for the support they receive and look for ways to help others along the way.
And we are grateful for them, too. Stories like theirs remind us that Connecticut Foodshare's mobile food pantries provide more than food. They offer relief, dignity, and connection for neighbors across Connecticut.
