Connecticut Foodshare provides Thanksgiving food to partner food pantries that distribute groceries, as well as community kitchens and emergency shelters that prepare meals.

Connecticut Foodshare purchases some turkeys and gift cards, but we rely heavily on corporate and community donations to meet our goal of providing a holiday meal for about 50,000 households through a combination of turkeys, chickens, and gift cards.

Connecticut Foodshare hopes to provide turkeys, gift cards, and TEFAP Chickens along with white potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and onions.

Connecticut Foodshare also distributes TEFAP whole chickens to eligible programs, as well as some gift cards. This helps us increase the number of households to which we can provide Thanksgiving food. We suggest that you provide a turkey, whole chicken, OR gift card to each household to cover the main dish, along with an allocation of produce to provide some side dishes.

Gift cards are very limited in number, and in most cases, allocation is based on proximity to participating stores to make it easier for neighbors to use the gift card to purchase their own turkey.

Our goal is to distribute our limited Thanksgiving donations as equitably as possible to reach partners and neighbors across the state. Thanksgiving allocations are based on the monthly reports for numbers served that your program provides to Connecticut Foodshare. Our goal is to divide our anticipated Thanksgiving donations proportionally across the network.

On-Site Partner Support Program

The Connecticut Foodshare On-Site Partner Support Program now offers learning sessions to agency partners on a rolling, as-requested basis. This program supports agency partners by helping strengthen their efforts to address food insecurity, resulting in increased food access and improved neighbor experience. It includes customized, in-person learning sessions at agency partners’ locations, led by an AmeriCorps VISTA member. AmeriCorps VISTA is a federal program that helps fight poverty by building capacity in nonprofits and public agencies.

Examples of support could include (but are not limited to):

-           Using social media to raise awareness, increase donations, and recruit volunteers

-           Guidance on starting a small herb or vegetable garden and/or improving fresh food production

-           Brainstorming and planning action steps to put your ideas into practice

Here’s what agency partners are saying about the program:

”The templates, forms, [and] examples are especially helpful.”

“[We appreciated] the opportunity to collaborate and have open communication, especially with our volunteers.”

“This was perfect for our pantry.”
